The Art In Motion program was started in 1992 by Master Eric King. Master King grew up in Sourthern California where his love for the Martial Arts and Gymnastics began. At the age of 12 he began his training in the art of Sticky Hand Kung-Fu - a very old and traditional style of Kung-Fu.
In the mid 80's he was introduced to Shaolin Kenpo by a friend and a few years later he started training in the classical Korean Martial Art of Tang Soo Do.
Impressed by the fighting styles, weaponry techniques and open hand forms of his Tang Soo Do instructors, Master Kenny Purnell and Mr. Clarence "Lucky" Ellison, Master King decided to focus his studies here.
The Art in Motion program is for students 12 yrs of age and up. Classes are held weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. The classes focus on Conditioning and Pad Work, Punching and Kicking Techniques (il soo sik), Self-Defense Techniques (ho sin sul), Forms (hyungs), Sparring and Weapon Techniques.
Conditioning is for the student who would like to burn a few extra calories and tone the body or for those looking for a challenging workout.
Pad Work helps to emphasize the importance of blocking, punching and kicking while working with a padded shield.
Punching and kicking Techniques (il soo sik), also known as One-Step sparring. These are prearranged punching and kicking drills designed to teach timing, distance, balance and coordination. One-Steps will help you feel more confident about your abilities to protect yourself.
Self-Defense (ho sin sul) techniques teach you how to defend against a variety of grabs and holds.
Forms (hyungs) are a series of basic blocking, striking, kicking and turning techniques performed in a predetermined, logical sequence against imaginary adversaries. Forms drills enable the student to increase their balance, coordination, power, agility, flexibility and endurance. A Hyung will become engrained and automatic, and the mental battle becomes logical and calculated to the point that one is no longer distracted by emotion or physical awareness.
Sparring classes are typically held on Friday evenings. Sparring allows students to practice their techniques in a controlled environment.
Weapon Techniques - Introduction classes are currently offered once a month on a Saturday afternoon. Each month will focus on a different weapon.
